Buy vs. rent with BAH
BAH varies by rank, dependents and year. Compare your allowance against the full cost of ownership: principal, interest, taxes, insurance, maintenance and any HOA dues. Renting may fit a short assignment; buying may fit a longer holding period. Check your current rate on the official DoD BAH calculator, then we'll compare it to a realistic payment.
Commute to the gates
The Bernie Beck Main Gate (T.J. Mills Blvd off US-190/I-14), Clear Creek, Clarke Road, East and East/West Range Road gates offer 24/7 access under published schedules. Other gates, including 10th Street, Fort Hood Street, Santa Fe, 79th Street, Mohawk and Copperas Cove South, generally operate on weekdays, roughly 5:30 a.m.–8 p.m.
Gate hours and access rules change. Confirm the current schedule on the official Fort Hood site before planning your commute. Morning traffic on US-190/I-14 can back up, so choose a route relative to your unit’s gate, not just the nearest city.
Visitors without DoD ID should start at the Marvin Leath Visitors Welcome Center near the Main Gate and check current entry requirements.
Schools
Check official district sites for boundaries and calendars: Killeen ISD (Killeen and Harker Heights) and Copperas Cove ISD.
